With the public becoming more educated about the environment, climate change and sustainability, there has been an even greater drive to come up with great sustainable promotional products. "Green", "Eco-friendly" and "Sustainable" are becoming the buzz words of the moment. There are several things you can do to ensure that your event or promotion meets the public's growing standards.
PLANNING YOUR ECO EVENT
Decide how important being "green" is for your event or promotion.
Assess your market and try to incorporate as many green initiatives into your plans relative to the event size, budget and nature. Talk to everyone who has an interest in how the event is going to be run. Discuss ideas and possible ways to reduce the environmental impact of your event. What products do you need? Is there a green option?
COMMUNICATE
Once you have decided on how you are going to proceed with the event or promotion it's important to publicise your environmental commitment. Include this as part of the event's marketing and also include information on the steps you have taken to attendees.
REDUCING YOUR IMPACT
What can you send digitally? Is recycled paper viable for invitations, programs and posters? Can you double side print? Promotional products, is there an eco-friendly option? Can you organise greener transport? Is Carbon Offsetting viable?
IDEA: One option to consider is online registration for events. Most people have access to the internet and email. You will always have a small percentage who will need to have written registration available, however the benefit of having online registration available for the majority far outweighs the disadvantages.
IDEA: Another option for presentations is to have a CD of the presentations available instead of printed notes. Presentations could also be emailed to the attendees or be available on a website for download.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE
You can choose caterers or products that have a lower impact on the environment. Do you want to go organic with food? Can you use cloth napkins, or recycled paper napkins? What about water? Is having water jugs and coolers viable?
IDEA: You can also explore promotional product options for some products. Instead of having plastic water bottles or cups think about giving attendees mugs or aluminium water bottles as part of their event bag.
